10 Must-See Special Events in Ottawa this Winter
Ottawa is blessed with an abundance of events that will brighten anyone’s winter—here are 10 of the must-sees of the season.
On at the National Arts Centre January 30-February 1, come experience Swan Lake — a classical ballet masterpiece brought to life by the National Ballet of Canada and choreographer James Kudelka. The mingling of sensuality and lyricism renews the classical piece for a contemporary audience.
On February 1, Ottawa hosts a unique competition. Hundreds of winter enthusiasts will ice skate for 8 km, cross-country ski for 5 km and run for 5 km starting at Dow’s Lake. Even if you don’t partake in the race, the event is definitely exciting to watch as everyone cheers on the competitors! The annual Winterlude Triathlon coincides with all the festive winter activities that are happening around Ottawa this snowy season.
18th Annual Viennese Opera Ball
The Viennese Opera Ball is one of the most prestigious events on the Ottawa calendar! On February 1 at the Fairmont Château Laurier, some of the most beautiful traditions of Austrian culture are on display. Dinner is announced by a trumpet fanfare, after which debutantes and cavaliers twirl around the dance floor to the Viennese Waltz.
Elvis is back, February 5-9! Le Théâtre du Casino presents Elvis Experience, a brand new production entirely devoted to Elvis’ Las Vegas years. Accompanied by 24 musicians and eight backup singers, Martin Fontaine takes us back to the early ’70s, portraying Elvis at the peak of his popularity.
Ottawa Fashion Week
Ottawa Fashion Week takes place at the Casino du Lac-Leamy February 6-8. On Saturday the 8th, the fundraising dinner called ‘Stepping out in her Shoes’ takes place, with silent and live auction items up for bid and raffle. Chef Jean-Claude Chartrand from L’Orée de bois restaurant partners with the Hilton culinary team to create an exquisite menu for this special event.
Canadian Ski Marathon
For super endurance, consider the Canadian Ski Marathon, the world’s longest cross-country ski tour, February 8-9, 2014. This two-day, 160km (99-mile) event is open to skier participants of all ages and caters to roughly 2,500 skiers annually. You can choose to ski as little as 12 km or the whole 160 km; you set the pace. The trail for this marathon is only groomed once per year between Lachute and Gatineau, Québec.
The Gatineau Loppet takes place February 14-16, 2014 and is Canada’s largest cross-country ski event, bringing some of the very best distance racers from Canada and the world to the Ottawa-Gatineau area. There are a variety of distance races in the classic and freestyle categories open for registration in addition to the Gatineau Loppet Challenge.
Spirits on Sparks
Taking place on the Sparks Street Mall February 14-16 is a new outdoor street celebration of liquor from around the world. There will be ice bars for tastings and pairings, dance parties and more along one of Ottawa’s most significant heritage streets, just one block south of Parliament Hill.
Winter Jazz Festival
On at the National Arts Centre (and other venues) from February 14-16 is the Winter Jazz Festival. This event is full of jazz artists of international acclaim as well a showcase of the best local talent on offer.
