Let’s Go Ottawa

Savour Ottawa Chef/Media Farm Tour #1 a hit!

On Monday, September 13, a couple dozen chefs and media representatives took a ride through Ottawa’s countryside to visit three Savour Ottawa member farms: Acorn Creek Garden Farm, Senior Farm and the Elk Ranch.

Participants met the farmers, took short tours of the operations and learned much more about the local foods movement that is Savour Ottawa. They were also provided with a delicious lunch — using ingredients sourced from the farms on the tour — prepared by Chef Bruce Enloe, owner of The Branch Restaurant.

A second tour is planned for Monday, September 27 heading to farms in the south end of the city. Tours are for Savour Ottawa members and members of the media (unfortunately not for the general public). If you’re interested in attending the September 27 tour, please contact Jantine at media [at] ottawatourism [dot] ca as soon as possible, as spaces are limited.

How many people does it take to pull a plane?

ottawa-international-airport-lock-credit-ottawa-tourismA shot of the INTERIOR of the Ottawa International Airport. The Plane Pull happens OUTSIDE!25 appears to be the answer, as can be seen in the annual Plane Pull Challenge at the Ottawa International Airport.

This event — to be held on Saturday, September 11 from 10am to 4pm — pits teams against each other to see who can pull FedEx A310 the fastest across a short distance along the tarmac. Spectators are encouraged!

Proceeds from the teams’ fundraising go to Project Clear Skies and the Sens Foundation.

One day only? Secret beer from Beau’s All Natural

beaus1Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company in nearby Vankleek Hill is known not just for its great brews but also its innovativeness. They’ve now just announced that they’ve brewed a special, extra malty, extra hoppy version of their beer and are selling it tomorrow — Thursday, September 9 — at their brewery and at select bars and restaurants.

Known as ‘sticke’ – German slang for ‘secret’ – it’s supposedly a tradition of brewers of Alt Beer in Dusseldorf.

Beau’s has brewed an amped-up version of FestivAle – their summer seasonal beer (which recently won a gold medal at le Mondial de la Biere in Strasbourg, France).

Ask for “Festivale Plus” tomorrow at the following locations in Ottawa: Arrow & Loon, Atomic Rooster, Play Food & Wine, Imperial Café, Irene’s, Wellington Gastropub, Whalesbone & Town On Elgin.

Ballygiblins in Carleton Place also has it, as does the Cheshire Cat in Carp.

In Toronto, try it at Bar Volo, Bryden’s, C’est What, Highway 61 & The Rhino. In Cambridge, visit Golden Kiwi.

Gananoque’s Old English Pub, Guelph’s Woolwich Arrow, Kemptville’s Salamanders & The Branch are also serving it.

In Kingston, visit Queen’s U Grad Club & Kingston Brewing Co; in Perth, visit The Crown & Stone Cellar, and in Vankleek Hill, go to lueberry Hill.

The Canal and the Great Wall: A Tale of Two Sites

exibition-in-china 1

Who says UNESCO World Heritage sites don’t play great together? This summer, the friendly cooperation between Canada and China continued full force as the Great Wall of China and the Rideau Canal partook in mutually beneficial promotions in each others’ destinations.

Rideau CanalBadaling, part of the Beijing municipality, is home to the most visited section of the Great Wall, and for a week at the beginning of August, tourists there were greeted with kiosks and travel information about Ottawa and the Rideau Canal. It’s a link between one of the world’s oldest landmarks and one of the world’s youngest attractions, and as Chinese tourists continue to flock to Canada in increasing numbers every year, it’s a partnership that makes sure Ottawa will be a top part of their itineraries.

In exchange, tourists to Ottawa were treated to special features on the Great Wall and Chinese cultural dancing and exhibitions during this year’s Rideau Canal Festival. For those who’ve never had the chance to visit the Great Wall (and I am one of you), you can get a sense of the majesty in the video below, when Ottawa Tourism president Noel Buckley was in Badaling signing the friendship agreement.

Ottawans who love the Rideau Canal can be proud to know she’s getting the exposure she deserves worldwide. This begs another question: is the canal male or female? Feel free to debate below.

Savour Ottawa Chef/ Media Farm Tours

Last year, Savour Ottawa, an initiative that links local farmers and local chefs, hosted two Chef / Media Farm Tours, where we invited travel and food journalists and Savour Ottawa member chefs to a daytrip in Ottawa’s countryside to visit three different Savour Ottawa farms. We’re doing it again this year!

On Monday, September 13 and Monday, September 27, we’re hosting two different tours. We’ll meet in the ByWard Market for breakfast and quick tour, then head out on the road. We’ll visit three farms, and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by The Branch Restaurant. We’ll return to the ByWard Market in the mid- to late afternoon.

Limited places are available to travel and culinary journalists (including bloggers). We’re sorry but this tour is NOT available for the general public. If you are interested in participating, please send an e-mail to with your name, contact info, outlets and preferred date. Please note that the number of places on the tour is limited so participation is not guaranteed. We will confirm your participation as early as possible.

See what last year’s participants had to say:

Savour Ottawa is overseen by Ottawa Tourism, the City of Ottawa (rural affairs and markets management) and Just Food, an organization that works closely with farmers and on sustainable agricultural practices.

Restaurants, caterers and retailers who join Savour Ottawa have shown a commitment to sourcing local food, which is identified as coming from inside the boundaries of the City of Ottawa, any county that touches the borders of Ottawa or from the Outaoauis region in neighbouring Québec.
