WinterBites is a new culinary event running January 12 – 28. Created by participating local restaurants and OTTAWA Magazine, it offers three-course prix fixe menus for $15.
Several of the restaurants participating in WinterBites are also Savour Ottawa members. The Savour Ottawa initiative supports and promotes local foods by linking local farmers with local chefs, retailers and consumers.
The ByWard Market is not just one of Canada’s oldest and largest farmers’ markets, it’s also the name of the four-block-by-four-block neighbourhood that surrounds it. This area has more than 120 places to eat and drink, tons of unique shopping, million-dollar condos, taverns, pubs, fine-dining restaurants and greasy spoons. It’s one of the most eclectic neighbourhoods in the country.
It’s also the birthplace of BeaverTails, a delicious hot pastry treat, available year-round from a handy kiosk. In winter, you can also enjoy the unique tradition of eating a BeaverTail at one of the several kiosks located on the frozen Rideau Canal Skateway.
If you’re lucky, you might also encounter the enticing smell of freshly roasted chestnuts in the ByWard Market. During weekends for part of the winter season, Luciano Pradal sells the warming and nutritious snack from the sidewalk in front of the Italian grocer La Bottega Nicastro.
