A look ahead… long range story ideas
  • War of 1812 monument: fall 2014: A striking new monument to commemorate the War of 1812 will be unveiled on Parliament Hill.
  • NAC Orchestra in U.K.: October 2014: The National Arts Centre Orchestra, led by Music Director Pinchas Zukerman, will tour the U.K. October 22-31, 2014, under the royal patronage of Prince Charles. The tour will also mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I.
  • Terry Fox exhibit: April 2015: The Canadian Museum of Civilization (soon to be renamed the Canadian Museum of History) will present Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada, an exhibit celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope and the effect young Terry Fox had on this country.
  • FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada: June 7-26, 2015 (check schedule): Canada—including Ottawa—will host this prestigious soccer competition.
  • Nordstrom’s and Simons coming to Rideau Centre: 2015: Ottawa’s downtown shopping centre will welcome two new large department stores, one American and one from Québec.
  • A renovated and possibly renamed Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada will reopen in 2016.
  • Canada’s 150th birthday: throughout 2017: As the capital, Ottawa is the place to be for Canada’s sesquicentennial. Already announced for spring 2017: the unveiling of a new monument to former Governor General Lord Stanley and his famous hockey trophy the Stanley Cup, to be located on the Sparks Street Mall at Elgin Street. There’s even talk of an outdoor National Hockey League game in December to commemorate 100 years of the NHL.
