Check out two distinctly different churches with the same name in Canada

Check out two distinctly different churches with the same name in CanadaOntario and Quebec feature two cathedrals with the same name - and both are worth a visit while on holiday in Canada for their incredible architectural design and rich history. Travellers who appreciate fine art, historical landmarks and manmade beauty should not miss a look at the Notre Dame Basilica Cathedral in Ottawa, and the Notre Dame Basilica Cathedral in Montreal. These two churches are located only a couple hours away from each other, and add a wonderful personality to each city in their own right.

In Montreal, the Notre Dame Cathedral has been a mainstay in the metropolis since the 1600s. The church's website says that it originated in 1642 as a small wooden chapel, which turned into the massive structure it is today by 1829. Demonstrating incredible detailing throughout its exterior and interior, this church is a work of art in itself. Some of the highlights include a striking altar carved in dark wood and the high-arched ceiling that makes sound echo and bounce off the towering walls.

Travellers are encouraged to take a guided tour through the church to learn more about its deep roots in the city of Montreal. Oftentimes there are events occurring throughout the year, including choir performances and celebrations of religious feast days.

The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa has similar characteristics but boasts its own personality as well. Designed by Canon Georges Bouillon in collaboration with bishops and other clergy, the final church was completed in 1885, says the organization's website. About a decade ago, there was a massive restoration project that fixed up the entire church, which now stands tall and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.

When touring Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa, guests will want to take a moment to see the front altar. This piece is golden and colourful, depicting various stories from the Bible in a Gothic-inspired design. The intricate works on the stained glass windows are also worth noting for their classic design and elegant look.

Admiring Ottawa and Montreal's churches is a great way to sample some of the historical architecture in these beautiful cities. These two places of worship rival many of the cathedrals found throughout Europe, which can make for an exciting experience while on holiday in Canada.
