It's all geek to me at Ottawa' Comiccon

It's all geek to me at Ottawa' ComicconIf travellers are in Ottawa on May 12 and 13, they may see a few strange things happening on the streets. That's because the annual Ottawa Comiccon has come to town, encouraging self-proclaimed geeks and nerds of all ages to dress up as their favourite comic, video game and cartoon characters to swap stories, books, games and more at this massive festival.

The 2012 event will be held at the new CE Centre, meaning this year may be bigger and better than ever, thanks to all the additional space and new surprises added to the lineup of attractions, lectures and exhibitions. Comiccons  began as a homage to comic books and have evolved to include all sorts of pop culture genres, such as video games, movies, music and more. This one in Canada' capital city will not focus on one particular fandom, allowing for people from across the country and the world to share their enthusiasm for their favourite characters and hobbies.

Participants can delight in the various presentations and contests offered at this celebration. Some may wish to enter the costume competition, while others can take part in the card-based gaming tournaments where players can battle it out with their various collected cards. There will also be more than 100 vendors that will sell action figures, comics, movies, clothing and other memorabilia.

One of the best parts of comiccons is the ability to meet and greet famous actors, voice-over talents and artists in person. The Ottawa event is no exception, as the convention will hosts several famous figures revered by the comic audience. Comic book fans can check out Dale Eaglesham as he answers fans' questions about working with DC and Marvel, while Star Trek mainstays Patrick Stewart and John de Lancie will be present for photos and guest panels.

Besides the people who help these characters come to life, the Ottawa Comiccon will also feature some special movie and television props for fans to check out up close. The Deloran time machine featured in the Back to the Future series will be on display, as will costumes from the original Star Wars movies.

If travellers have ever been a fan of comic books, cult movies or simply dressing up in costume, they can participate in this great event happening in Ottawa this May, which welcomes locals and tourists to indulge their inner dweeb.
