The village of Osgoode in Ottawa will be turning back the clock this summer for its annual Medieval Festival. Knights in shining armour will compete for glory and the eye of the ladies in waiting at this exciting celebration on July 7-8, which will also feature various interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Run by a team of dedicated volunteers as well as an appointed king and queen, this event is a favourite among locals and tourists alike who enjoy medieval gatherings that pay homage to the romantic and thrilling time period. In the past, thousands have attended the festival in the temporary "Kingdom of Osgoode," many of which dress the part and assume the phrases and mannerisms from the time period. All of the theatricals create an interesting atmosphere that makes guests feel as if they have travelled back to a time where people battled for love, lived in lavish castles and would celebrate with song, dance and feasting.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to participating in the festival. Guests can take part in the medieval horseshoe tournament, see jousting demonstrations or check out the Old World dancing shows. Travellers can also barter for their own chainmail, leather pouch or period jewellery in the festival's shopping area. A lavish feast is scheduled during the weekend created by the local Red Dot Cafe.
School-aged children are encouraged to partake in several mini contests to get in the spirit of the event. New this year, young kids can download a dragon picture online to colour and compete for prizes, while those in older grades are asked to create an imaginative dragon story.
Travellers interested in attending the event can find out more information through the official website for this medieval gathering. Guests may check out the activities for a day, or the entire weekend, full of fun and festivities in the imaginary Kingdom of Osgoode.
Ottawa is the ultimate destination for tourists looking to experience unique and memorable festivals while enjoying some travel through Canada. Besides the medieval celebration, this summer also brings concerts, traditional dance shows, fireworks displays and other exciting activities to make for an unforgettable holiday in the capital city.
