Kids will be thrilled when brought on holiday to Canada's capital city for the nearby Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival in Almonte. On August 11 and 12, this small town located a few miles outside of downtown Ottawa will come alive with dozens of puppeteers presenting their skills out on the streets and in venues across Almonte.
It's Magic!
This event is in its eighth season and has more acts lined up than ever before, bringing skills from across the globe. For this year's festivities, the theme is "It's Magic!" which will allow little ones to spark their imaginations while adults get to transport back in time to be kids again at these fun and often interactive shows.
"There will likely be a few bunnies popping out of top hats at Puppets Up! this year, but the real magic is the connection that happens between the puppets and our audiences," said the festival’s Artistic Director, Noreen Young. "It’s truly a magical family fun event."
What to expect at Puppet's Up!
There is much to see and do during the Puppets Up! event, such as attending a show by the French Pelele Marionette Company. They will present "Tauromaquia" through exquisite puppetry, telling the story of Curro the bullfighter. Families can see a puppet rendition of Cinderella performers by the Massachusetts-based Tanglewood Marionettes group or experience "The Gluttonous Dragon" show hosted by a local group called the Gestes Theatre in Gatineau.
Travellers see a festive puppet-theme parade during the event as well, featuring many costumed performers and some puppeteers helping their favourite marionettes walk along the route. After the kids go to bed, there will be a special gala for adults on Saturday night held at the town hall with a unique and thrilling "puppet cabaret" show.
If guests are planning their travel to Ontario and want to know more information about the specific shows and times, they can visit the official Puppet's Up! website. Heading to the international puppet show in Almonte can be an ideal way to spend time with the whole family while enjoying the offerings of Canada's capital and its nearby towns.
