Travellers who visit Canada in any season rarely leave their camera at home, and during this year's Ottawa Photography Festival, also known as Festival X, amateur photographers can browse dozens of galleries throughout the city that will be highlighting local and international artists who use film as their paintbrush.
This year's theme, Otherwise than Seeing: Photograph, Image, Representation, focuses on how the medium has transformed how information passes through the hands of people around the world, whether through the mass media or candid and personal shots.
Ever since photography was invented at the turn of the 19th century, it has documented some of the most pivotal moments in human history, from civil rights movements to political milestones. Through the lenses of numerous artists on display during the festival, visitors will have the chance to come up with their own conclusions about the unique medium.
Randy Innes, a cultural studies scholar who focuses primarily on photography, will be this year's guest essayist, covering the entire event from September 20-30.
