Situated south of the Ottawa River just west of downtown Ottawa, Westboro and Wellington Village have quickly become a hotspots for students and youthful travellers who want a taste of the more bohemian side of the Canadian capital. With awesome street festivals like Westfest and a growing artist community, these small boroughs are also paving the way for other neighbourhoods in Ottawa to provide more unique restaurants.
Visitors who travel through Canada will undoubtedly want to head to the capital city, where they can not only get a taste for the nation's fascinating history, but also a burgeoning food scene in Westboro and Wellington Village. Here are a few restaurants that have made names for themselves in these areas:
Allium: Canadian-French fusion
This modern bistro opened in August of 2004 and has become one of the hottest high-end restaurants in Wellington Village. Fusing Canadian comfort foods with gourmet French cooking techniques, the menu at Allium changes every month, thanks to a curious team of chefs who are never satisfied with the norm.
Absinthe: Cocktails with a twist
In the late 19th century, absinthe was the preferred drink of European artists, including Vincent Van Gogh. With a funky environment and impressive list of cocktails, Absinthe embodies the eccentric lifestyles of numerous free thinkers. Along with this anise-flavoured liquor, diners can also choose from a tempting dinner selection that includes rainbow trout, pork tenderloin and even Korean BBQ quail.
The Works: Just burgers
With more than 50 (yes, 50) burgers on the menu, The Works is a meat lover's paradise. From the Plain Jane (lettuce, burger, bun) to the ridiculous Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love (peanut butter, bacon and bananas), this eatery makes ordering the perfect meal a daunting task. Of course, visitors have to save room for a milkshake to wash down that last bite of burger.
The Table Restaurant: Vegetables for everyone
With a plethora of buffet items to choose from, even the hungriest carnivore will be more than satisfied after feasting at The Table Restaurant. Considered one of the healthiest restaurants in Canada by Best Health Magazine, this eatery provides unique dishes inspired by seasonal produce and influenced by the many cultures that reside in Ottawa.
