Guide to Ottawa's fall music scene

Guide to Ottawa's fall music sceneAs summer wraps up to make way for fall, Ottawa's music scene is shifting with the season as well, and beginning in September, visitors who travel to Ontario can expect to have plenty of international and Canadian acts to choose from.

Here's a guide to what's happening in Ottawa this fall:

September: Folk Fest, Arboretum and Hoedown

The month of September is on fire with music festivals, starting from the first week to the last. Of course, there's the Ottawa Folk Festival, which will feature the likes of Bon Iver and Great Lake Swimmers headlining the five-day event. Taking place at Hog's Back Park from September 6-10, the festival is one not to miss.

Toward the middle of the month is the Arboretum festival at the old jailhouse and SAW Gallery, where visitors can watch local Canadian performers as they nibble on delicious bites made by Ottawa's premier chefs.

Finally, the month will close out with the O-town Hoedown, which will surely have everyone stomping and clapping their way to an unforgettable night at venues across the city. Get to know Canada's country roots while sipping on the area's best beers and wine.

October: Bend Sinister, Socalled and The Wooden Sky

Those who travel to Canada for the first time and find themselves in Ottawa during the month of October may want to get a feel for the Great White North's burgeoning music scene. If the likes of Broken Social Scene, Metric and Feist weren't enough to impress, then these latest rockers may fit the bill.

On October 9, visitors can check out Bend Sinister at the Raw Sugar Cafe, where the four Vancouver-based band members will be rocking out a sweet set of their latest tunes. Lead vocalist Dan Moxon's funky tone dances around the scale, and with upbeat rhythms, he certainly knows how to create a catchy riff that anyone can sing along to.

Socalled, a prominent DJ, producer and rapper, will be playing at the Black Sheep Inn on October 28. After collaborating with dozens of Canadian artists, the Montreal-based musician puts on an outrageously entertaining show.
