Julia Krolik and Owen Fernley are Ottawa-based experimental artists, and in 2011 they embarked on a journey to create an interactive installation depicting the lives of 88 individuals, each corresponding to a piano key. This musical and photographic venture, entitled "88 Years," catalogues local Ottawans whose faces depict the nation's capital with poignant beauty.
"The piano is a natural way to sonify our musical age," Fernley told Ottawa Life Magazine. "By placing each year since 1924 on the chromatic scale, an individual can be represented by a single key. A chord becomes a friend, a family or a relationship. A note becomes a full life, well-lived. Man and machine move along the same arrow of time to which we are all captive."
This month, Ottawa Life Magazine will host a soiree, where savvy visitors who travel to Ontario can mingle with Krolik, Fernley and dozens of other Ottawa-area artists. The movie project, which complements the photos with beautiful music, will be unveiled during the meet-and-greet event, allowing visitors to fully absorb this profound installation.
