Christmas is on Tuesday, and for guests staying at hotels in Ottawa who want to squeeze in as many holiday festivities as possible before the 25th, the capital city has them covered. Indie-rock parties, lighting ceremonies and art exhibits are taking place throughout the weekend, making it easy for visitors to relish in as much cheer as they can.
Here's a guide to holiday events happening just before and immediately following the most joyous day of the year:
Les Mécaniques célestes at NAC French Theatre
Visitors might want to brush up on their French before they attend Les Mécaniques Célestes at the National Arts Centre Theatre December 19-23. This all-French performance, directed by visual artist Claudie Gagnon, is playful and whimsical, making it perfect for families who travel through Canada this time of year.
Midnight Lullabies photography exhibition at Invisible Cinema
Darryl Reid's photography will be on display from December 21 through January 23, so even if visitors won't be in town until after Christmas, they can still check out the exhibition. As a catalogue of Ottawa's underground music scene, the collection of photographs manage to encapsulate a movement that expresses the quirky and eclectic side of the Canadian capital.
Totally Grand New Year's Eve at The Ernst & Young Centre
Want to ring in the new year on the right note? The Totally Grand New Year's Eve at the Ernst & Young Centre is perfect for travellers to Ottawa who want to count down the minutes and seconds to midnight, when 2013 begins and they can say farewell to yet another year. As the largest party in the city, this event will make attendees feel like they're celebrities as they walk along a red carpet leading up to the venue. Cocktails begin at 7 p.m. before dinner and a fantastic performance by SHINE and hours of dancing before the clock strikes 12.
Amos the Transparent at Maverick's Bar
On Friday night (Dec.21), indie rockers Amos the Transparent will be rocking the house at Maverick's Bar, just in time for visitors to relieve stress from work and start off the holiday week on the right track. The Gallop and The Strain will also be performing with the beloved band, and there will be plenty of refreshments and beverages for attendees to enjoy throughout the evening.
