Travellers visiting Ottawa in the wintertime certainly have a lot to choose from in terms of what they can do. However, those who are travelling to Canada's capital may want to take advantage of the various places to ice skate. Here are some of the best indoor and outdoor rinks and locations for ice skating in Ottawa:
Rideau Canal
It is impossible to bring up ice skating in Canada's capital without talking about the Rideau Canal, which will become the largest skating rink in the world this winter. The ice extends for nearly 5 miles and goes through the heart of downtown Ottawa. Usually, the rink is open from late December or early January to late February or early March. It is easy to find the daily ice conditions to ensure it is safe for skating. The Rideau Canal skating area is also the focal point of the famous annual Winterlude celebration.
Rink of Dreams at Ottawa City Hall
This will be the second year that the Rink of Dreams at City Hall will be open, and after its first year of success, it is expecting the same reaction. Its outdoor ice surface stays frozen with artificial refrigeration, making it perfect even if it may be a little warm outside. The rink is located at the Marion Dewar Plaza, and there is a hut there that is open each day for people to change and gather their things.
Rideau Hall Outdoor Skating Rink
This historic outdoor skating rink is an interesting and unique place to go since it was originally built in 1872. Those who would rather not skate should still check out the historic grounds, which feature snowy paths.
Indoor Rinks/Skating Clubs
Those who would rather skate indoors have their pick as well. There are a number of indoors rinks in the city, and some of those that are not directly run by Ottawa include Carleton University Ice House, RA Centre and Bells Sensplex. There are also a number of clubs for individuals who are looking to stay in Ottawa for an extended vacation. Some clubs include Gloucester Skating Club, Minto Skating Club and Nepean Skating Club.
