Planning and booking a trip early is always advisable, and those who are considering travelling to Ottawa this summer may want to consider going in June. Not only is this a great time of year to visit Canada's capital, but it is also when the Tim Horton's Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival takes place.
This event has been around for 20 years, and to celebrate its anniversary, this year's festivities will be bigger than ever. Teams continue to sign up for this rowing competition, and organizers are expecting quite the year, since 83 teams have already registered. Athletes come from all over the country as well as the United States, and are gearing up for an event that attracts thousands. The race weekend is held on June 21 to 23, and takes place at Mooney’s Bay. It includes everything from numerous food vendors to free live music throughout the weekend.
Those who attend the event can also donate to a good cause, as the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation raises money through the paddlers' registration fees, and attendees can donate even though the event is free. The foundation distributes its earnings to various charities in Ottawa. Last year, the foundation gave the funds to seven different charities.
Not only will travellers be able to enjoy a day full of races and free music, but they also can bring their kids along for the fun-filled weekend. Starting on Friday night, there is plenty for the little ones to do while enjoying this weekend away. On Friday evening, the children's area is complete with face painters, drum-making and lantern-making areas. These fun activities will be featured throughout the weekend, but when Saturday hits, there will be different performers as they day goes on. Children can enjoy performances from Little Ray's Reptiles and Paddling Puppeteers. Little Ray's Reptile Zoo is one of Ottawa's most interactive takes on promoting eco-friendly awareness and wildlife conservation, whereas Paddling Puppeteers gives kids an educational, yet fun history lesson about the Ottawa River through a puppet show.
Kids can also be entertained by the tricks and illusions of magician Michael Bourada, who has 17 years of experience under his belt. Parents may want to sit down and enjoy this show as well, as Bourada's swift movements and tricks may make anyone a believer of magic. Children who may want to skip the magic, but would love to see a ventriloquist can check out Tim Holland, the Puppet Tamer.
