Though Ottawa has a culinary reputation that spans dozens of international cuisine varieties and cooking styles, some travellers may be searching for something uniquely Canadian during their tours of Ottawa. As a country, Canada has produced a number of popular dishes that have been embraced by the world over, yet few treats are as commonly associated with the country as the Quebecois treat known as poutine. The dish involves a mountain of gravy and cheese curds set atop a basket of golden French fries, and has become an immensely popular treat with travellers looking for a hearty snack. Ottawa is a great place to try poutine, and there is a wealth of places where visitors can sample the delicacy.
While the dish has become ubiquitous throughout the country, poutine was perfected in local greasy spoons, diners and food stands. Chief among these humble eateries is the popular Hintonburger, which enjoys a four-star rating on Yelp!, and has been praised for boasting what diners refer to as both the "best burger" and "best poutine" in Ottawa.
Another spot that is sure to send French fry fans hearts aflutter is S&G Burgers & Fries, which has really made a name for itself and its hearty poutine. Fans of the Food Network may also enjoy a trip to the Elgin Street Diner, the poutine which made an appearance on the hit show "You Gotta Eat Here."
Of course, if travellers are hoping to go to bed on a full stomach, many of these establishments are also open late. Many crowds heading home from the bars have decided to cap their night with a hearty plate of poutine from Smoke's Poutinerie and many other spots in the capital city.
