Those who are planning on travelling to Ottawa likely have a lengthy list of what they want to see when they visit Canada's capital. Some of the biggest attractions include the Rideau Canal, the National Gallery of Canada and Parliament Hill. The latter is one of the must-sees, as this is where the focal point of the Canadian government takes place, and those who are spending the day checking out the gothic buildings may want a bite to eat at some point. There are a great number of restaurants to choose from around the Parliament Hill area, and here are just a few to start a search with:
Beckta Dining & Wine
Beckta Dining & Wine, just a few blocks south of the Hill, is known for its inviting atmosphere and delicious flavours. The driving force behind the food served at this restaurant is that it is fresh, much of it is found locally and it is used in unique and fantastic ways. For dinner, guests can enjoy entrees such as the Lake Erie Walleye, which is complete with smoked sweet mama squash puree, Brussels sprouts, cider-glazed oyster mushrooms, toasted pecans and a vanilla and yuzu butter. The New Brunswick Lobster, a butter-poached half lobster with arugula gnocchi, red radish and crispy guanciale, makes for an excellent entree as well.
Smoke's Poutinerie
For a less formal snack, you may want to try “poutine” – that famous mixture of French fries, gravy and fresh cheese curds. There’s a place just off Rideau Street in Ottawa that specializes in it: Smoke's Poutinerie. Guests can enjoy everything from beef, chicken, veggies or even just a new sauce to try a delicious twist on this Canadian classic.
The Black Thorn
This restaurant is located in the ByWard Market area, and is considered one of the best kept secrets of Ottawa. The Black Thorn is known for its locally sourced food and delicious pizza selections. Not to mention, it also has four different seating areas - the main bar area, front patio, courtyard patio and dining room.
Johnny Farina
Travellers who love Italian food, can check out Johnny Farina on Elgin Street. This casual Italian restaurant is known for its fresh and delicious traditional Italian fare. It offers everything from bruschetta to wood-oven pizzas to fresh homemade pasta like the blackened chicken on linguini in an herbed monterosa sauce.
