Although some lovers of Douglas Adams' work know it was the science fiction author's birthday on March 11, not everyone is aware that a great place to have a drink in his honour is the Zaphod Beeblebrox nightclub in Ottawa. Named after a character from Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," the club also features themed drinks from the book series such as the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.
Located at 27 York Street in the ByWard Market neighbourhood and operating since March 1992, the club has hosted a wide variety of performers from Alanis Morrissette and Corrosion of Conformity, to the Proclaimers.
"One thing I think is really important is to have a broad base of music and in some ways entice the audience to lift the bar that high, so that they will experience and discover new music," explains owner Eugene Haslam.
Towel Day, a celebration of Adams, occurs on May 25 – 42 days after his birthday, but understanding the book references in that arrangement isn't required to have a good time. Zaphod's has consistently held excellent concerts for the occasion. Last year's Towel Day featured And What Army and Crown Vic.
