Travellers who are in Ottawa this winter season are in luck, as the entire city will be hosting a wealth of incredible attractions, shows and things to do during their annual Winterlude festival. One great event that should not be missed by foodies is the 21st annual Stew Cook-Off. Guests to Canada's capital city should follow their nose to the ByWard Market to participate and watch this great spectacle taking place on February 3rd.
Restaurants and local businesses from this vibrant neighbourhood participate in this fun and friendly competition. For a few dollars, travellers can sample all the stews they would like and vote on their favourites alongside a panel of expert judges.
The main focus of this great event is not just the food. Every year the Stew Cook-off chooses a charity to donate all their proceeds and ticket sales to, which is a great way to give back to the local community. In the past, this event has raised thousands of dollars for organizations such as Ottawa's Youth Services Bureau, which helps young people find affordable housing, counselling services and health care.
Last year, the judges chose a Jameson Whiskey lamb and wild mushroom stew created by the Aulde Dubliner pub. Spectators selected a beef stew with parmesan cheese and spinach by the STeaK restaurant. Other concoctions that were counted among the best were a salmon basque stew and a chicken with meatball ragu and gnocchi.
Even if travellers are picky eaters, the wide range of stews offered is sure to please any palate. Those who will be on holiday in Ottawa for a few days can also use this opportunity to sample the culinary styles of several restaurants, which could help them select the place to dine later in their vacation.
Most of the tastings happen outside to accommodate its increasing popularity. The event takes place outside and, due to the chilly weather often occurring in February, guests may want to bundle up for the event to ensure staying warm and comfortable during the festivities.
Those who would like to watch can get more information from the ByWard Market's website, which also includes other events and attractions that will be happening in this area during Winterlude. The Cook-Off helps commence Winterlude and has been a favourite competition for years by both guests to the city and locals alike.
