The sounds of the American South will be coming to Canada's capital city this winter for an exciting event that guests to the area will not want to miss. At the Shenkman Arts Centre, the Zydeco Loco band will be performing for a special evening of New Orleans culture, dancing and culinary delights as part of the larger Winterlude celebration happening throughout Ottawa.
On February 11th, The Richcraft Theatre will come alive with the sounds of Cajun song and bayou rhythms created by this popular band. Guests who arrive early can first sample some wonderful cuisine that is a nod at this Southern culture, including homemade jambalaya and gumbo. Both dishes usually have fresh seafood and sausage as the stars, are cooked with savoury spices and served over a bed of dirty rice.
After dinner, the dancing will begin as the band gears up for an evening of rowdy music that will feature many original songs as well as covers by some famous artists such as Buddy Miller, Clifton Chenier, Hank Williams and the Hackberry Ramblers. All of these tunes are in the spirit of Zydeco and the traditions of the beautiful state of Louisiana.
Zydeco music is a unique blend of the French fiddle, German accordion, Irish Celtic beats and Latin rhythms. Since New Orleans has remained a busy coastal port for years, the style of music has incorporated various influences to create its own creative sound. With word of mouth, social media and world tours, Zydeco bands have gained recognition throughout the world for the lively and fun tunes they produce.
The band Zydeco Loco is no exception, as they have enjoyed success throughout Canada and the rest of North America. This quartet of talented musicians formed in Ottawa more than 15 years ago and plays locally at venues throughout the city. They say Zydeco Loco is the first successful band in its genre to grace Canada's capital. This event at the Shenkman Arts Centre will celebrate their recent album release titled Playing With Matches, and they will perform some new tracks along with old favourites for the crowd.
Guests may purchase tickets that include the show and dinner through the venue's website. The festivities coincide with all the exciting events and activities Ottawa is offering during its Winterlude Extravaganza that will continue throughout February.
