Some say that kindness makes the world go 'round, and several Ottawa residents are holding true to these sentiments be organising a city-wide Kindness Week, hosted by United Way Ottawa. This initiative is encouraging locals and travellers alike to participate in events that promote community connection and positivity within Canada' capital city. Those visiting the area can get involved though volunteer opportunities or by attending some of the unique and exciting festivities.
Kindness Week is in its fourth year, raising awareness for this original and worthwhile cause. From February 18th to the 25th, those in the city are asked to perform kind acts for others that can be big or small, whether it's holding doors open or offering to spend time at a local nonprofit.
Social media is also playing a large role in the campaign for kindness. Participants can share their stories of Good Samaritan acts online through the organisation's website, or even send eCards to loved ones to show their appreciation for the good things they do. Kindness Week's Facebook page has information about the events as well, so fans may follow and find out what activities they would like to be a part of during the campaign.
One charitable event that is happening during Ottawa's Kindness Week is the Fashion Show for Funds, which travellers who have a penchant for design will want to experience. An innovative pre-teen named Kate Reeve has organised the entire event to support children's hospice care. Several high-end designers from around town will display their creations, modelled by professionals at the Glebe Community Centre.
Other events will offer some tasty culinary delights around Ottawa in the spirit of kindness and camaraderie. On Saturday, February 19th, travellers can find a special Kindness Treats booth at the ByWard Market, where volunteers will be handing out tasty cupcakes. At the Fisher Park Outdoor Rink, travellers of all ages can enjoy a family skate day on the 21st and complimentary hot chocolate.
No matter when visitors to Ottawa arrive during Kindness Week, they are sure to find a wealth of things to see and do during their holiday. They can then bring home the lessons learned during the festival to share with loved ones and continue the good deed tradition.
