Marathon runners train extensively to be able to race for long distances and push themselves to the limit. Taking part in a competition like this often requires participants prepare for months, getting their bodies used to the vigorous obstacles to overcome by running for miles at a time. Travellers who will be taking tours of Ottawa this May may want to attend the city's annual marathon for some exciting races to watch and take part in.
A marathon typically is a little more than 42 kilometres and has been this traditional length since it was formally introduced at the Olympics in the late 1800s. It has become a popular event for athletes all over the world, as more than 500 of these challenging races occur globally every year. Ottawa's marathon will weave through the downtown area, passing by several major city landmarks, including museums, bridges and the Rideau Canal.
The race in Ottawa will be run in several categories, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k competition. In the past, thousands of racers, representing all ages and abilities, have hit the streets to compete. Many use the race as a way to raise funds for charities, such as The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association. Individuals or teams can choose to run for one of the registered organisations or support their own cause.
Not only will there be plenty of racing, but the entire weekend is full of events for all to check out. On May 24, there will be a large fitness and health expo at the Ottawa Convention Centre, full of vendors offering information on the latest athletic products and health foods. There will be a fun pasta dinner for runners and their families at the venue, and on race day, all can attend the awards ceremonies for the winners of each run.
Travellers who enjoy training for marathons or simply like to watch races should not miss this exciting event in Canada's capital city. The shorter races will take place on May 26 and the marathon will begin on May 27. It is free to watch the competitors, and runners may purchase tickets to participate through the official website.
