Ottawa will be a little louder come the end of May as the monster truck rally rolls into town. Travellers who have a penchant for massive four-wheelers and the excitement of these events should make plans for Canada's capital city on May 26.
Monster trucks got their start in the 1970s as modified pickup trucks with large suspensions and big wheels. The first time these monstrous vehicles were driven over cars and other obstacles for show was in the early 1980s, and the classic pastime is still alive and well today.
The extravaganza will feature friendly competitions by participating trucks and drivers that hail from across the globe. Called Monster Spectacular, the event will see each vehicle demonstrate its power and force by performing death-defying feats like wheelies and sailing over lines of crushed cars. Some will race side by side, while others spin around in circles kicking up dust and debris with their gigantic tires. Audiences often delight in crashes or when monster trucks flip over, as the trained drivers are rarely injured and have been doing such tricks for years. Travellers may love seeing their favourite trucks battle it out in Scotiabank Place for first place bragging rights in a number of events and showcases.
Not only will there be giant monster trucks, but spectators will also have the chance to see incredible motocross tricks performed by talented professionals. These freestyle bikers fly over the same dirt hills that the trucks do and reach amazing heights on two wheels. The athletes will demonstrate their motocross prowess in between monster truck events to offer a unique and exciting show.
The lineup for Ottawa has yet to be announced on the truck rally's official blog, but the tour has been held at several locales nationwide with many famous trucks and drivers making appearances. One of the trucks expected to headline the show is Bounty Hunter, which has been featured in professional tournaments throughout North America. The vehicle has been showcased in other events taking place in Quebec, Montreal and St. John's.
Travellers of all ages taking tours of Ottawa this spring should also not miss the Monster Spectacular event that will take in Scotiabank Place. The festivities may make for some amazing vacation memories while enjoying Canada's capital city.
