Sometimes, there is nothing better for travellers to be a part of than an exciting festival featuring Ottawa's best artists. The New Art Festival (TNAF) is the city's largest outdoor celebration of resident and international creative minds, bringing together the works of more than 200 individuals during its two-day run of activities, exhibits and more.
The idea behind this occasion is to cut out the middle man and connect artists with their audience, while also supporting others in the community. Thousands turn up for the shows every year, travelling from across the country and the world to take part in the celebration. Many of the events are suitable for all ages, so a trip to the festival can be a great thing for families to experience together on their tours of Ottawa.
On June 2 and 3, artists and guests for TNAF will gather in the Glebe neighbourhood's Central Park as they have for the past two decades. Travellers can take their time visiting each of the booths where art will be featured, and also encounter the performance artists and musicians who will be on stage throughout the day.
The artists who participate are judged in several categories as well and will receive awards in topics such as best photography, best sculpture and best textiles. Several local companies often sponsor these honours, including businesses such as the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum and the School of the Photographic Arts in Ottawa.
Some of the artists featured at last year's event included fibre art expert Allyson Green, flameworked glass professional Charlynne Lafontaine and sculptor Diane Sullivan.
Anyone is encouraged to attend the free festivities and can spend time purchasing unique souvenirs, seeing the live performances and even sampling some delicious, local cuisine.
Central Park in the Glebe is beautiful at any time of year, but the grassy and sunny park especially comes alive during TNAF. An adventure in this area paired with visits to Ottawa's other fantastic attractions can all make for a great holiday in the city.
