Although the Ottawa Folk Festival is not until September, travellers planning to travel to Ontario this summer may want to organize their trip now due to its popularity. The event is annually one of the most vibrant celebrations of music in the city, bringing together residents of Canada's capital and visitors alike to enjoy various forms of dance, music, storytelling and visual art.
Since 1994, the festival has taken root in Ottawa and evolved into one of the premiere celebrations of artistic expression around. Organisers felt that the city was the perfect locale to showcase its grassroots love of simple, soulful music and art that has been prevalent in its coffee shops, bars and city streets for decades. In the 1970s, there was also a "Festival for the Folks" that ran for a short while, which also was used for inspiration to form the current folk festival in the area.
"The Ottawa Folk Festival has always been a community-oriented event, where patrons can enjoy a wide variety of unique and educational experiences," said Mark Monahan, festival supervisor.
This year promises to be just as exciting and packed with things to do as past celebrations. Running from September 6-10, spectators will be able to witness a range of concerts, demonstrations, installations and even culinary offerings that pay homage to the folk roots of this city at Hog's Back Park.
For instance, in the past great performers like Bright Eyes, JJ Grey & Mofro, Matt Costa and The Riot Police were among the dozens that played in venues throughout the city. There was a special "Envirotent" where guests could learn about the eco-friendly projects going on in Ottawa, and a KidsZone where children can dance to music created just for them. Officials also plan to bring back Jam Sessions, which was a designated tent for anyone to bring their instruments and play with fellow artists.
Travellers can either purchase tickets through the event's official website or find out ways that volunteers and help are needed, which could lead to free admittance and other special perks. The celebration of all things folk is suitable for everyone, so travellers with families, friends or a special someone are welcome to make the Ottawa Folk Festival part of their summer holiday.
