Ottawa is the perfect city in the summer to enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities and attractions that can make for a fun holiday trip. While things like biking, hiking, swimming and other active pursuits can be exciting, some travellers may be looking for more relaxed events that are great to indulge during some downtime.
See an outdoor Shakespearean performance this summer
Throughout July, locals and guests taking tours of Ottawa can catch a live play hosted by the Bear & Co. theatre group downtown. At various venues throughout the city, patrons will be able to see the group's rendition of "As You Like It" for a fun early evening out for families, couples and any Shakespeare fan. Talented actors will set up temporary stages in places such as Lynwood Park and Clare Gardens for guests to attend. Given that admission is at a wallet-friendly pass-the-hat price, seeing this show can also be an affordable way to experience some of the local culture in Canada's capital.
According to Ottawa Start, director Will Somers says he has made some modifications to the original script, including a change in the play's given environment.
"Our setting the play in the 1950's Greenwich Village offers a contemporary audience a way to understand the arguments of class warfare, right to power and abuse of power that Shakespeare makes throughout the play," said Somers, as told to the news source. "The workers' movement battles McCarthyism, folksters mingle with beatniks and features cool classic folk music, 'As You Like It' offers audiences a great way to beat the heat."
Catch a feature film outside in Ottawa
Outdoor plays are one great way to enjoy the summer sun, but travellers can also spend some time after the sun goes down at a movie screening. Centretown Movies will be hosting several movie nights throughout the summer held at Dundonald Park sponsored by local businesses and projected on a massive screen.
Admission is by donation and guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets, chairs and refreshments to get comfortable and enjoy the films. Some of the scheduled screenings this year include "Midnight in Paris," "The Muppets" and "Ironman."
Ottawa has many events and activities available to travellers throughout the summer, suitable for all types of guests who have made the trip to enjoy Canada's capital city on holiday.
