Get sporty in Ottawa like a true Olympian
Getting excited about the Summer Olympic Games? With less than a week to go before the opening ceremonies, some wannabe Olympians might be getting anxious and eager to get active like their favourite athletes. While many Ottawans are enthusiastic bikers, due in large part to hundreds of kilometres of bike paths throughout the city, there are numerous other active pursuits that visitors can enjoy while staying at Ottawa hotels.
Paddling on the Rideau Canal
This historical canal was constructed in the early 19th century and is a focal point of Ottawan life, from the Rideau Canal Festival in August to ice skating in the winter. Visitors who want to paddle like an Olympian while taking in the scenery can easily rent a boat to careen down the canal with a few friends. Additionally, rowing enthusiasts can plop their shells into the water and race down the canal as the sun comes up.
For travellers who want to avoid getting wet, there are walking and bike paths along the entire urban length of the canal, and cyclists can rent a two-wheeler from any number of dealers.
Adrenaline kicks with whitewater rafting
From now until the end of September, Ottawa visitors can jump into a whitewater rafting boat just an hour and a half outside of the city. Owl Rafting provides excursion options throughout the season at rapids ranging from family friendly to adrenalin-lovers-only. Because the trips tend to take about half a day to complete, meals are provided for each participant. After getting wet and wild on some of Ontario's most exhilarating waterways, paddlers can peruse through dozens of photos taken by a professional photographer and send unique postcards to loved ones at home.
