Canada and Korea come together to brighten up 2013 Winterlude

The annual Winterlude celebration offers enough fun programs and activities to fill an entire travel guide to Canada, but this year one attraction will be even brighter. The National Capital Commission (NCC) recently announced this year's event, which runs from February 1-18, will feature an outdoor Garden of Lanterns in Confederation Park.

Glowing lanterns will create tunnels and paths throughout Confederation Park, an official Winterlude site in the heart of Ottawa. The attraction is a display of Canadian-Korean friendship and showcases the city's cultural diversity. The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Canada's diplomatic relations with South Korea, making it the perfect time to reflect the diplomacy through the capital city's massive celebration of winter.

The NCC worked with the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival in Jinju, South Korea, to construct a 35-metre long tunnel made up of more than 1,300 lanterns. Veterans Affairs Canada will also be presenting an impressive ice sculpture in the park in honour of the Canadian contribution to the end of the Korean War 60 years ago.

Confederation Park isn't the only place visitors on tours of Ottawa can see the display of Korean-Canadian friendship during Winterlude. Six massive lanterns will also be hung beneath the Laurier Avenue Bridge for skaters on the Rideau Canal Skateway to enjoy.
