Caravaggio and His Followers in RomeAt the National Gallery of Canada
June 17 through September 11, Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada presents an ambitious exhibition on the genius of the great Caravaggio and the impact he had on his contemporaries. Five years in the making, the exhibition brings together a dozen of Caravaggio’s masterpieces with more than 40 paintings by the great artists who looked to him for inspiration. It focuses on the period that Caravaggio spent in Rome, and offers a rare opportunity for visitors to explore his unique style and provocative character – not to mention the profound influence he had on European Baroque artists including Simon Vouet, Peter Paul Rubens and Orazio Gentileschi.
The exhibition includes compelling images of life among the demi-monde, mythology, and religion – juxtaposed with those he inspired. If you’re coming to Ottawa this summer, this is a must-see. Admission to the exhibition is included with some Ottawa Getaway Packages and tickets are available when you book hotel only.
