Check out the photographic displays throughout Ottawa
Ottawa Travel Guide | Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:04
Photography is a wonderful way to catch a glimpse of a moment in time, whether it be of an elegant fashion model strutting down the runway or a historical event that unfolded decades ago. Travellers who are visiting the beautiful city of Ottawa have several opportunities to see some fantastic photographic exhibits at the great museums that can be explored around the bustling metropolis.
At the National Gallery of Canada this December, guests can see a beautiful display of photos taken by American artists between 1990-1950. Some of the photographers’ masterpieces depict the changes and adaptations that the world of pictures underwent during this time. Included in the show are photos by Lisette Model, Edward Steichen and Margaret Bourke-White. Another great exhibit to experience while at the National Gallery of Canada is the David Askevold showcase. This contemporary artist often uses photographic elements in several of his pieces, which illustrate his evolution as an artist through pictures, film and sculpture.
Those who have a love of animals should not miss the new photography currently on display at the Canadian Museum of Nature. Now through mid-November, winners from the Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year contest are being showcased at this complex that specialises in the natural environment of the country’s vast landscapes. On display are photos of many interesting animals, such as reptiles, insects and bears. There are various categories for these awards as well, including a section of young photographers and animals specifically captured in the water.
Although the feel of the Canadian War Museum can sometimes be somber, a visit to this fascinating place may be a great reminder to avoid past mistakes and tragedies in history. Guests who come to the complex can view the various photographic exhibits on display there, which captured some difficult moments in history. However many of these photos are relatable, as some show the regular everyday lives of soldiers in the field, sometimes smiling and having fun despite their circumstances. The incredible talents of the photographers should also be admired, because many managed to capture some amazing shots while combating compromising situations at the same time.
Travellers who choose Canada’s thrilling capital city for their next holiday should not miss these interesting and thought-provoking exhibits, which could be a great addition to any travel itinerary while in Ottawa.
