Congratulations to Benoit Legault who is the recipient of the Ottawa Tourism Travel Writing Award for 2010! For the first time ever, 2 runners-up were also named - congratulations also go to Amy Eckert and Jeff Heilman.
Benoit Legault’s article “Ottawa – La non-capitale” appeared in the June 19-20, 2010 edition of Le Devoir. The Montreal writer, who comes to Ottawa from time to time, wrote the piece after a weekend visit earlier that June. “The best travel stories are personal,” says contest judge Peter Johansen, who is an Associate Professor, School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. “They don’t simply recount a whirlwind visit of tourist highlights – in Ottawa’s case, Parliament Hill, the museums, a couple of chic ByWard Market bars. Rather, they let us see a real human being engage with a real place, a place where people live and work and play. A great story shows experience as much as it provides an itinerary. That is exactly what Benoit Legault does in “Ottawa – La non-capitale.” Click here to view the article online.
Amy Eckert’s story “Fest Stops: Canadian Tulip Festival” appeared in the March 2010 issue of Cleveland Magazine. Judge Peter Johansen had this to say about the Michigan writer’s article: “She links the annual event to her own Dutch heritage. But having won our interest, she holds onto it with deft prose and wry observation, while providing her American readers with solid reasons to make our city a worthy destination.” Click here to view the article online.
Jeff Heilman’s article “Capital Ventures” appeared in the November 2010 issue of Business Traveler magazine. According to Judge Peter Johansen, the New York writer “employs memorable turns of phrase that make his story much more than a mere encyclopedia of fact, no matter how useful those facts are. This story combines superb reporting and polished writing in one dandy package that breaks out of the mould for much of service journalism.”
