See a free art exhibit in Ottawa’s City Hall

Ottawa Travel Guide | Mardi, 06 Décembre 2011 08:54

Canada’s capital city may be one of the best places for art lovers to visit on holiday. Ottawa has a vibrant art scene with many large and small galleries that welcome visitors to view some incredible local and international masterpieces. Attending art events and museums is a way to get a feel for a metropolis and its culture while enjoying a holiday in a new place. Ottawa is one of those destinations that offers some ideal opportunities to appreciate art in many forms.

For example, The City Hall Art Gallery downtown is a wonderful place to check out some of the latest talent in the art world as well as some historical exhibits. From now until January 8, the work of Ramses Madina will be on display, depicting some fascinating themes about everyday life. Titled Night for Day: Road Crews, the work in the exhibit involved Madina following the routines of several crews as they managed projects on local roadways in the cover of darkness.

The Ottawa Citizen says that Madina gave a lecture on his works in early December, explaining why he choose night crew workers as his main focus for his most recent photographs. As an Ottawa native, Madina recently became interested in the night crews who work in darkness to complete massive projects while most people are sleeping. He feels that sometimes these crews get a bad reputation and he hopes to shed a new light on the dedication and drive it takes to do such a physical job.

Most of the images are in black and white, and have an eerie glow to them from the floodlights and dust surrounding many of the workers. This unique display of a different kind of subject for art may make for a truly fascinating exhibit to experience while visiting Ottawa and its wide array of art galleries.

Those who wish to head to the City Hall Art Gallery can do so daily from 9AM to 6PM, even on major holidays, says the event’s Facebook page. The display is sponsored by the Public Art Program, which organizes exhibits like these throughout Ottawa for locals and tourists alike to enjoy. Admission is free of charge to all, which could make for a fun and wallet-friendly activity to try with loved ones this winter in the city.
