See an incredible one-woman show in Ottawa this winter
Ottawa Travel Guide | Mercredi, 30 Novembre 2011 17:35
Attending massive theatrical plays and witnessing large troupes of actors performing on stage can be thrilling, but smaller and more intimate demonstrations can evoke the same emotion and satisfaction for theatre buffs. Travellers who are fans of live stage shows should not miss a special performance that will take place at the Great Canadian Theatre Company this January 17 through February 5. Seeing a play with loved ones while on a fantastic holiday in Canada's capital city may be the perfect way to spend an evening out on the town.
You Fancy Yourself is the ultimate one-woman show, written and performed by the talented actress Maja Ardal. She was born in Iceland and is now a Canadian resident, hosting acting workshops and performing her plays across the country. According to her website, Ardal received the 2002 George Luscombe Award for her work in theatre mentoring.
This play tells the story of a small girl named Elsa who is from Iceland and has an incredible ability to imagine herself in wondrous situations. The child moves to Scotland and must cope with the massive changes the move will bring about in her life. Through monologues and short stories, Ardal moves through a series of tales that leaves audience members feeling connected to the main character's plight and challenges as she overcomes her surroundings and grows into a young woman. The scenes are unapologetic and often look at childhood in a way that is raw, funny and sometimes unforgiving, which brings about a truly memorable theatre experience.
The Toronto Star gave You Fancy Yourself three out of four stars for its ability to induce uproarious laugher as well as deep emotions as the plot unfolds. The credit goes to Ardal's style of representing various characters throughout the performance with a grace and fluidity that is rare and profound. She quickly shifts between personalities while keeping the points of interest easily understood.
Those who wish to attend can purchase tickets on the venue's website for the various evening and matinee shows held throughout the week.
Travellers who love to immerse themselves in the local culture of the place they are visiting should not miss this spectacular play at the Great Canadian Theatre Company this winter in Ottawa.
