Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum

Armageddon outta’ here! A fascinating relic from a time when the world seemed on the brink of nuclear war, Diefenbunker is a subterranean safe haven meant to protect Canada’s government operations and leaders in the event of explosive conflict.  Nicknamed Diefenbunker after John Diefenbaker, Canadian Prime Minister at the time of its construction, this formerly top secret facility is now a National Historic Site of Canada, and welcomes visitors inside for a close-up look at its 1960s era War Cabinet Room, Emergency Government Situation Room, cryptographic areas, broadcasting studio, living quarters – even a Bank of Canada vault – all four storeys of which are hidden underground.  Guided and self-guided audio/video tours are available. No helmets or gas masks required!
