I am a baby BOOMER. In fact, I relate so profoundly with being a boomer that I started my own blog ottawaboomers.com. You see, even though the boomer generation is ageing, we are also the generation that believed in change … in a cultural revolution … in making the world a better place.
After reading a Time Magazine article on boomers and isolation, it got me thinking. A recent study by the Stanford Center on Longevity’s Sightlines Project revealed shocking results. The 55-to-64-year-olds just about to join the ranks of the elderly are far less socially engaged now than their predecessors were at the same age 20 years ago. This of course is just a hypothesis and being the largest generation to date, it is difficult to quantify.
Laura L. Carstensen from Time Magazine does suggest that if boomers remain engaged they may spark a second social revolution. “This revolution wouldn’t look like the revolution imagined back at Woodstock; there would be far less chanting in the streets. Instead, boomers could become an army of millions of gray-haired people, better educated than any previous generation, armed with unprecedented financial resources and decades of experience, ready to solve the practical problems of life. This revolution could finally help the nation become a better place for young people.”
As Marc Freedman, the CEO of Encore.org, says, “Maybe we can stop trying to stay young and instead rally to help people who actually are.”
There is no better example of this phenomenon than One Young World!
David Jones is a few years shy of being a boomer, but Kate Robertson can count herself in. And what about the One Young World Counsellors, Kofi Annan, Sir Bob Geldof, Arianna Huffington, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Paul Polman, Mary Robinson, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Sir Richard Branson. These distinguished world leaders are all boomers!
And of course a shout out to many of the OYW volunteers, supporters and sponsors, all from the boomer generation. So you see, boomers ARE socially engaged and we ARE ready to help the next generation create a better world.
At One Young World Ottawa our motto is “Our Time is Now” and as boomers we believe it is also “Our Time” to help YOU lead us into the future!
