2017 GOES NATIONAL!

Canadians from coast-to-coast are learning all about the many exciting reasons to visit Ottawa during 2017 thanks to one of the largest national surge marketing campaigns ever undertaken by Ottawa Tourism. The campaign includes national online digital video, TV and social media featuring Rick Mercer and Katherine Levac, plus a 12-page newspaper insert being distributed in daily newspapers in every province. Running late November and early December, the campaign was made possible with support from Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation’s TIPP Program, Celebrations Ottawa Inc., four National Museums, Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group and Air Canada. In addition to the campaign, a separate promotional campaign was launched on social media – again featuring Rick Mercer and Katherine Levac – offering entrants the chance to win a VIP Canada Day 2017 experience in Ottawa!

TWEET & MEET

Ottawa Tourism attended PCMA Canada Innovation Conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador from November 20-22. This major annual conference attracts up to 400 association professionals for networking and learning. It provides a key platform for promoting Ottawa as a convention destination. During the event, Ottawa Tourism and partners hosted a 2017-themed Tweet & Meet and a fun run where participants wore red gloves and carried glow sticks to raise money for the PCMA Education Foundation. Ottawa was well represented throughout this major industry conference.

GETTING NOTICED

Ottawa Tourism hosts hundreds of travel media journalists and camera crews each year. Here’s a sampling of some of what they had to say about our destination over the past month.

Lonely Planet has named Canada as the #1 country to visit in 2017, in part, thanks to our 150th anniversary celebrations! Lonely Planet also announced that Ottawa is the best place to visit within Canada for sesquicentennial programming!

DK Eyewitness Travel chooses a different destination every month as “THE place to go” and has named Ottawa as THE place in the world to visit in February of 2017!

Ottawa Tourism hosted the vibrant Nikki Bayley in late October and she has produced an outstanding slideshow of 10 Reasons to Visit Ottawa in 2017 for B.C. Living. Seriously, read it now, and share away!

Paul Wade, a Brit who has written extensively about Canada and has been to Ottawa before, did a five-hotels-in-five-nights stay in Ottawa in late October. His resulting piece appeared in THE prestigious The Telegraph.

Allison Tibaldi came to Ottawa with a group of mostly NYC-based media in September, and her great article just appeared in Off Metro in NYC.

In early August, Alan Solomon visited Ottawa and produced this great piece for the Chicago Tribune which highlights Ottawa 2017 events and programming! Andoni Aldasoro won the grand prize at the Conozca/GoMedia Mexico event last year and visited Ottawa as part of his prize in June. His article about Ottawa’s museums appeared in Mexico’s Luxe and Class magazine website and appeared in print in the August-October issue.

Eve Thomas, a young writer based in Montréal, visited Ottawa in June and has produced a few pieces about Ottawa for Mercedes Benz magazine Toronto-based Miriam Porter and her son Noah visited Ottawa in early August. Here’s a piece she’s shared on Ottawa’s great family-friendly attractions (with some 2017 preview coverage as well), on wheels.ca.

The Shore Club was named a great Canadian steakhouse in this piece on the Food Network’s site.

A late September U.S. media trip led to this coverage in Jetsetter.com, detailing some great shopping options in Ottawa’s ByWard Market neighbourhood.

TENNIS, ANYONE?

Ottawa has aced another major sporting event for 2017 – the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas will take to the court at The Arena at TD Place February 3 – 5! Even more exciting – it will be a World Group first-round tie between Canada and Great Britain, featuring number 4 ranked Milos Raonic of Canada and world number one Andy Murray of Great Britain. Attracting the event was made possible thanks to the participation of the City of Ottawaw, Province of Ontario, Government of Canada and Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. Matches will be played on an indoor hard court and will be the first ever tennis event held at the TD Place venue. The last Davis Cup tie contested in Ottawa was more than 20 years ago when Canada defeated Jamaica 5-0 in a Group II zonal tie at the Ottawa Athletic Club in February 1994. The last time the Canadian Davis Cup team played in Ontario was a 5-0 victory over Dominican Republic at the Aviva Centre in Toronto in 2010.

SELLING CLOSE TO HOME

Ottawa Tourism and members recently attended major travel trade events in Ontario and Quebec. First up was the Ontario Motor Coach Association Marketplace in Niagara Falls. The team travelled to the event onboard one of the 417 Bus Lines motor coaches wrapped in 2017 graphics, but focused its promotion on the many great assets including new permanent exhibitions at National Museums that will still be here after Canada’s big year. Then it was off to Bienvenue Québec, a major travel trade show, where Ottawa Tourism and its many partners in attendance put the focus on relaxing Ottawa experiences.
