COMMON PITFALLS WITH TOURISM TERMS AND FACTS

We all love the Rideau Canal Skateway, that iconic frozen surface that is part of Ottawa’s transportation system each winter. Not only is it the world’s largest naturally frozen ice skating rink, it is also celebrating its 50th season this coming winter! The Skateway—maintained by the National Capital Commission—is 7.8km (4.8 miles) long and is equivalent in size to 90 Olympic-sized hockey rinks. There are places along the surface to rent skates, grab a BeaverTail or other treat, and to put your skates on (or take them off) in a warming hut. Note that Canadians often simply say and understand “skating” but we prefer to use “ice skating” to be clearer when dealing with international visitors.

CORRECT: The Rideau Canal Skateway is the “world’s largest naturally frozen ice skating rink.”

INCORRECT: The Rideau Canal Skateway is NOT “the world’s longest ice skating rink.”

YOUR PASSPORT PLEASE

For those of you who attended the Ottawa 2020 Vision: Turning DNA into ROI presentation last month, you will remember that as part of our strategic efforts to continually improve Ottawa’s visitor experience, Ottawa Tourism is looking to introduce a Destination Passport to help streamline the booking experience for visitors, both prior to their trip and in-destination. Ottawa Tourism is excited to develop an exclusive destination passport in partnership with members – assisting our competitiveness in this area with other major cities.

This project is still in its early stages with more details to follow in the coming months on how your business can be involved in this exclusive member opportunity. At this time, we invite interested members who wish to learn more about the Destination Passport to put your businesses’ names on our radar so that we can ensure you receive the details as they become available. Please send your expression of interest by email to Kelly Haussler, Manager, Destination Development, at [email protected]

STAFFING UPDATES

As we capped off a year that saw us welcome many new faces to the team, we’re pleased to announce the arrival of Middlé Lemoine, who joined us back in December in the position of Stakeholder Relations Coordinator. Fluent in both English and French, Middlé comes to us from the Dairy Farmers of Canada, and has held a variety of positions in both private and not-for-profit corporations. A graduate of the University of Guelph and Algonquin College, Middlé also holds a master’s degree from the University of Ottawa.

Looking ahead to this coming year, we anticipate another year of staff growth, and we look forward to providing you with updates on this as we seek to continuing finding and retaining the best talent. We’re still seeking to fill two open positions that were posted in late 2019, and our hope is to post for some additional roles early into this year. Stay tuned!

IN MARKET WITH WINTER

It’s official, winter is here and we are ready for it! So ready, in fact, we are already in market with our Winter Campaign in the Greater Toronto Area and in Montréal. Until February 12th, we will be targeting couples and families to start planning and ultimately book their stay in our wintery city this season. To showcase the best of winter in Ottawa, we are working with a variety of media partners such as Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, The Star, La Presse, Narcity and Urbania. From Winterlude and the 50th anniversary of the Rideau Canal Skateway to countless outdoor activities through Gatineau Park and the downtown core, visiting Ottawa is the most Canadian way to embrace winter.
