STEP FORWARD
Ottawa Tourism is establishing a volunteer database system based on the success of Ottawa 2017’s efforts. Ottawa Tourism has been working with Ottawa 2017 to transition key legacy assets as the latter prepares to turn out the lights. Part of the success of Ottawa 2017 was undoubtedly the incredible volunteerism culture and legacy that the year-long celebrations left, raising the bar on what we can accomplish when residents become ambassadors. To build on that legacy, Ottawa Tourism has set up a volunteer management system on the same platform used by Ottawa 2017 . The platform was built by InitLive, a local company that specializes in volunteer management. Ottawa Tourism is inviting former Ottawa 2017 volunteers to stay connected with events and tourism opportunities that may need volunteers by signing up. New volunteers are also welcome. The database will allow Ottawa Tourism to support special events that bring programming and economic impact to our city, benefiting our tourism industry while helping engaged Ottawans to be part of the engine that drives events in the city.  Sign up as a volunteer or to share the opportunity by clicking here.

RVS R BIG BUSINESS!
If you operate a rural tourism business and are interested in tapping into the RV market, you can list your business on www.terroirenvr.com. There is no cost to participate. This bilingual Montreal-based RV community network helps RVers plan their trips and explore countryside attractions, all while being able to book a one-night stop at listed attractions. The benefit to participating businesses is increased exposure to the RV market through this dedicated website to a qualified audience. The RVs are not looking to hook up their vehicles to power or facilities – they are simply looking to park their RV overnight (one night only) on the site of a rural tourism attraction from which they can also purchase product. For more information about this opportunity, please feel free to call Catherine Callary 613-237-5150 ext 106. If you’d simply like to sign your business up to participate, please reach out to Chloe Drouin.

OTTAWA’S OWN
In mid-February, Ottawa Tourism premiered Ottawa’s Own, a new campaign that tells the stories of five unique Ottawans – creators, innovators, and makers. One runs her own ice cream shop. Another roasts coffee. And the rest include a mural artist, a clothing designer, and a man who makes singular products our of recycled skateboards. Their inspiring stories-and the beautifully shot videos through which they are told–reveal a local side of our destination that is rarely seen but that is an important part of who we are. Watch the videos and nominate someone you know as an Ottawa’s Own on the campaign website.

BLITZ-A-PALOOZA!
In February, Travel Trade members joined Ottawa Tourism staff on a sales blitz to Quebec City and Montreal. A series of mini-marketplace events for Tour and Receptive Operators attracted 63 clients from 37 different companies. They each attended one of the four events and spent a half day meeting one-on-one with members and Ottawa TOurism. Clients and members enjoyed the individual mini-marketplace meetings, and took more time to get to know each other during networking coffee breaks and lunches, organized by our own Danielle Jolicoeur. The next Travel Trade Sales Blitz will take place in the Toronto area from April 3-6. For registration information for this upcoming Blitz, please contact Danielle.

VIP FAM
Ottawa Tourism’s will host a Mini-Marketplace for Canadian and U.S. Tour Operators and Receptive Tour Operators in late March. The“Ottawa Very Important Planners FAM’ will take place March 20-23. MEMBER BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE: CANNABIS TOURISM
With the pending legalization of cannabis, Ottawa Tourism is seeking input on its potential impact on the tourism industry. Media and industry partners are already curious as to how the consumption of cannabis will fit into and affect the tourism landscape in Ottawa. There will be strong opinions both for and against the proposed legislation, and we are not seeking to initiate a debate about the merits of the legislation. We are currently looking to equip Ottawa Tourism with relevant business intelligence in terms of how our members are preparing (or not) for cannabis. In short, we have begun to receive inquiries from news outlets as to what types of offerings will be available in and around Ottawa with regard to Cannabis Tourism, and we need your assistance to answer.
Obviously, full details on the rollout of the legislation (federally, provincially, and municipally) are still to come. If your business or organization has any plans to incorporate cannabis into your programming or plans to develop new programming where cannabis is featured, or consumption is welcome, please keep us informed. Thanks for helping us find out more about this development.
Please send your information to us here.
