One Young World Coming This Month!

With less than a month to go until the Ottawa summit on September 28, 2016, the positive energy of One Young World is starting to pulse through the city! On August 18, Mayor Jim Watson announced that the prestigious summit’s Opening Ceremony will take place on Parliament Hill. Is there a better way to officially welcome inspirational youth leaders from 196 countries to Canada’s Capital? Among the great speakers at the summit will be former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammed Yunus, singer and Oscar-winning actress Cher and Shopify COO Harley Finkelstein, to name a few. One Young World gathers the world’s brightest youth together, empowering them to debate, share ideas and create positive change across the globe. These are the leaders of tomorrow. Here are a few ways you can get involved with this great event:

Or you can also create your own interesting posts about the summit on your own accounts. The more posts that are put out there, the more people will get excited about this event!
Volunteer
From welcoming delegates at hotels to helping control room flow for the over 1,300 delegates arriving for the summit, volunteering is a great way to get involved.

WHAT TO DO WITH 100 WELLINGTON?

Have an opinion? Now is the time to voice it. The Government of Canada is currently in a public consultation process to determine the best use for 100 Wellington, the classical Beaux Arts-style building directly across from Parliament Hill. Currently the building is vacant and has been gutted for renovations, but the architecturally and historically important building (which was formerly the U.S. Embassy) will find another purpose in future years, and the time is right to share your thoughts on what that purpose should be. Please take the survey on this webpage when you have a moment to help shape the plan for 100 Wellington. Ottawa Tourism is actively participating in this file through our Destination Development department, and would like to see the building be a positive addition to our tourism landscape in Ottawa, through a tourism-friendly public use. We encourage the participation and engagement of Ottawa’s tourism industry as an important voice in the public consultation process.

2021 CANADA SUMMER GAMES BID

Ottawa Tourism prepared and submitted a comprehensive bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games. The Canada Games is the largest multi-sport event in the country and is a premium, nation‐building event that enriches Canadian culture and create lasting legacies. The Games rank alongside other major sporting events like the Grey Cup, World Junior Hockey Championship, and FIFA championships in terms of economic impact.  The Canada Summer Games were last held in Sherbrooke in 2013, where they attracted 16,000 visitors and generated an estimated $165 million in economic impact. On August 22, the local organizing committee, co-chaired by Ottawa Tourism, hosted the Canada Game Technical Review Committee and showcased selected sport and non-sport venues. Ottawa boasts many high quality sport and non-sport venues, and with the Games Village located at Carleton University, will offer a very compact venue plan, with 14 of the 20 sport venues located 10 minutes or less away. The bid will be evaluated and scored against bids from the Niagara Region, the City of Greater Sudbury and the combined cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph, with the announcement of the host city being made at the end of March 2017.
