Excited rallycross fans gathered in Ottawa from June 17-18, 2017 at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum to witness history; Canada’s first-ever Red Bull Global Rallycross Series held in Canada’s capital!
There was plenty of racing action for rallycross fans who attended this two-day event, with a non-stop action-packed schedule of heats, semi-finals, and finals.
In a year featuring many spectacular celebrations for Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, this Ottawa 2017 event was a huge hit with racing fans, who came out to see their favourite rallycross drivers – like Canadian Steve Arpin.
Arpin was the only Canadian rallycross driver to take part in the Red Bull GRC Series in Ottawa. On Saturday, Arpin rewarded fans with a thrilling victory in the series’ first-ever Canadian round, becoming the first repeat winner of the 2017 Red Bull GRC Series season.
Now that’s something to celebrate – Canada’s 150th birthday and a thrilling Canadian victory, at Canada’s first-ever Red Bull GRC Series!
A successful 2nd-place finish for Arpin in the Supercars Drivers Championship, behind America’s Tanner Foust, brought many cheers from the crowd at the track on Sunday.
This well-organized Canadian debut of the Red Bull GRC Series was a roaring success, thanks to the calibre of big-name rallycross drivers, and the professionally constructed, maintained, and technically challenging .762 mile track.
The Red Bull GRC Series track featured a mixture of dirt and tarmac, incorporating portions of the Rockcliffe Airport runway into the track. All eyes were on the track’s Red Bull GRC Series signature 70-foot jump that lay just before the finish line. Long straightaways, a joker lap, and plenty of wide-open corners gave drivers the opportunity to “put the pedal to the metal” and provided fans with an exciting rallycross experience.
The fun did not stop short on the track for racing fans here in Ottawa. Typical of Red Bull GRC Series events, this was a very fan-friendly event. Fans had the chance to get up-close-and-personal in the paddock with the rally cars, and with the drivers themselves! Drivers also hosted autograph sessions! What a thrill for racing fans!
For those looking for a little VIP treatment, the GRC Club Pass allowed fans to “enjoy the ultimate race club experience”. The GRC Club Pass provided a unique hospitality area that included a prime viewing location, dedicated bathrooms, complimentary Red Bull, a cash bar, a $10 Food Voucher to the dedicated Food Truck in the GRC Club, and a VIP Parking Pass. GRC Club Pass holders also got access to the paddock, the cars, and the stars of the Red Bull GRC Series!
This isn’t the first time that the Red Bull name has brought an exhilarating sporting event to Ottawa. Fans of Red Bull Crashed Ice may remember their successful inaugural event in collaboration with Ottawa 2017, that took place in downtown Ottawa March 3-4, 2017. The downhill ice track situated over the Ottawa Locks of the Rideau Canal—between the iconic Fairmont Château Laurier and Parliament Hill—provided an unparalleled setting for the adrenaline-pumping event.
Residents of, and visitors to, Ottawa can only hope that this is just the start of a beautiful relationship between our great city, and future awe-inspiring sporting events hosted by the Red Bull family!
