There’s a brand new spa in town! Just an easy 30-minute drive south of Ottawa’s busy downtown core, you’ll find a year-round, quiet, country retreat, nestled among lovely trees and acres of sprawling farmland. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, The Retreat & Spa at Strathmere is where you’ll want to be.
Opened just this September, this rustic, airy and chic retreat offers a plethora of à la carte services as well as spa and wellness packages that offer everything from yoga, to hiking, to a gourmet picnic lunch and cross-country skiing.
At the spa itself, you can opt for a luxurious manicure or pedicure complete with paraffin wax and shellac polish, if you wish. And you can bet that these treatments are offered in grand style. Settle into classic, salon-style chairs and take in the beautiful Canadian scenery all around you. No matter where you sit, you’ll get great views of the more than 100-year-old Strathmere farm, which the new Retreat & Spa calls home. If you would rather a massage, the spa offers those too. Choose between a relaxation massage or a hot stone massage. Facials are also available.
And if physical activity is more your thing, opt for a yoga class in The Retreat & Spa’s brand new yoga studio. This bright and airy wood-floored studio comes with all the equipment you might need, as well as large windows that lookout onto Strathmere’s beautiful property. Stretch, breathe, relax and take in the lovely scenery at any time of the year. Five different types of yoga classes are available from the beginner level to the more advanced. You can sign up for a single yoga class or purchase a multi-class pass.
Now with all of that relaxation, you’re bound to work up an appetite, so you’ll want to visit The Retreat Café. With its chic, modern décor and a cozy fireplace, this is a lovely place to have a meal at any time of the day.
Here, you’ll find delectable, clean eating lifestyle dishes featuring local ingredients – most of which are made on the Strathmere property itself. Looking for a good afternoon snack? We recommend the Café’s Artisan Cheeseboard, which offers a selection of locally made cheeses as well as homemade red pepper jelly, a port and plum preserve and honey made from two on-site beehives. Nearly everything you’ll find at Strathmere is local. They even work with a local butcher and fish monger.
Also, though the café is focused on clean eating, it’s fully-licensed. You’ll find a selection of local craft beer and VQA wines in addition to organic fair trade coffee and loose leaf Kimicha teas crafted by a local Tea Master.
So you’ve done some yoga, had a massage, enjoyed a fantastic meal and you’ve ordered a drink, now what? Grab a cozy blanket and get some fresh air by one of The Retreat & Spa’s bonfires. Take your drink outside and enjoy the warmth and glow of a crackling fire. Or to take your relaxation one step further, hop into one of Strathmere’s two hot tubs. Soak in the hot water and take in the stars above you. It’s much easier to see them out here than in the city! And during the warmer weather months, you’ll also find a heated salt water pool.
After all of that quiet, country relaxation, you might not want to drive back to the city and that’s okay. Strathmere is also home to small, quaint guesthouses offering 34 lovely rooms with television and individual washrooms. Some rooms also offer a balcony or a private, walk-out terrace.
After a full day of yoga, hiking and relaxing, why not get some wine and a delicious dessert from The Retreat Café and settle in with some cozy television watching for the night? You’re sure to wake up rejuvenated and refreshed.
For now, The Retreat & Spa offers yoga, hiking and cross-country skiing, but there are plans to also offer cooking classes, cooking demonstrations and gardening classes over the warmer weather months. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins can be accommodated if possible.
The Retreat & Spa is open every day; Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Want to reconnect with yourself or a loved one? Discover the charms of this idyllic country retreat and its gourmet café this spring!
