According to Julia W., the littlemissottawa Instagram account was born from a desire to showcase her beloved hometown.
She told Ottawa Tourism in an interview that she loves travelling to new locations and discovering everything that a new place has to offer. “Then I thought, you know, Ottawa has a lot to offer. I should really start exploring more at home,” she said, adding that she wanted to be a tourist in her own city. She noted that she coupled that desire with her passion for photography and the account started to steadily gain speed. Right now, IGer @littlemissottawa has more than 6,600 followers. “I bought a camera [last] June and the feedback’s been amazing!”
Julia W. said that what she likes about Ottawa is that it has a “unique charm,” which can be found in the beauty of its well-known attractions as well as in the interesting personalities of its smaller, independent shops. “It definitely has the beautiful, visual things like the Rideau Canal, all the parks and Parliament Hill,” she said. “But it’s also the little local shops. There’s lots to do here.” She added that some people assume Ottawa is a “boring” place. “But if you know where to look, you wouldn’t feel that way,” she said.
Julia W. also noted that locals should really get out, explore the city and take photos, as they will likely see Ottawa in a new light. “It helped me to grow as a photographer,” she said. “You’re really putting yourself out there and opening yourself up to new experiences. I see things differently now.”
In terms of taking photos of the city, Julia W. says her two favourite spots are the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa Locks, as they always provide a “stunning view” in any season at any time of the day. She specified however, that she prefers photographing the Ottawa Locks in the summer. “My absolute favourite is probably the Locks in the summer, when the sun sets over the water,” she said. “You can see the Alexandra Bridge and the Canadian Museum of History.”
She added that summer is her favourite time of year in Ottawa, as the city really seems to come to life. “The summer is my favourite season for activities,” Julia W. said. “Patios are always packed [and] there are so many great festivals to attend.” She noted however that despite the cold, Ottawa does a great job of animating the winter season as well with events such as Winterlude. “There’s just so much to do here,” she said. “It’s beautiful and there are lots of great things you can do, and a lot of great seasonal activities as well.”
