Ottawa is Canada’s first EcoDistrict! Located in the city’s downtown core with the Ottawa River to the north, the Rideau Canal to the east, Bronson Avenue to the west and Gloucester Street to the south, this is a district in which residents, property owners, businesses and organizations work together to reduce their environmental footprint. The EcoDistrict focuses on initiatives that will make Ottawa a greener city such as promoting cycling and the use of electric vehicles in Ottawa’s downtown core.
Recently, the EcoDistrict completed an assessment of available downtown bicycle parking spots. It is also working with local organizations and the City of Ottawa to determine ways to make it easier for people to connect by bike in Ottawa. Another EcoDistrict initiative is promoting the use of electric vehicles in the city’s downtown core. The District is currently working on the establishment of a new, highly-visible electric vehicle charging station that will help to make electric vehicles commonplace on Ottawa’s streets. The organization also seeks to promote local craft breweries operating within the district’s limits. This “Local Beer Friendly” initiative works to establish the EcoDistrict area as the “go-to” place for craft beer and to also help people find great local craft beer. In this initiative, emphasis is also placed upon reasons small, local craft breweries are good for the environment.
