If you’re looking for unique experiences this summer, you’re in for some surprises in Ottawa! Special celebrations are taking place all year long to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. Don’t miss this high-flying gourmet experience and multi-sensorial shows this summer.
The Sky Lounge
Sky Lounge is a temporary gourmet event that takes you 150 feet above the city from July 7 to 22, 2017. The lounge lifts up at Ottawa City Hall, so from the top you can enjoy a 360 view of the Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal, and Ottawa’s downtown.
Going up in the Sky Lounge may sound daunting, but less nerve-wracking than you would expect. The lounge is very stable, and you’re strapped into a race car style seat. Once everyone is ready, a crane lifts the lounge away from the earth. The ascent takes just over a minute, and then you can relax in the sky.
Once you’re up, take in the skyline and swivel your chair a little to see different angles. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, with everyone talking, laughing, and bonding through a unique and shared experience. It’s a truly magical sensation to sit in the sky with a glass of wine and good company.
The Sky Lounge team goes above and beyond to transform the evening in to a party in the sky. They blast well known songs by Canadian artists, put party hats on everyone, and help people capture photos of their feet dangling over the edge, with City Hall far below. The team makes the evening all the more memorable.
The Culinary Experience
Great food begins the moment you arrive, with drinks and gourmet appetizers in a tented cocktail area. During this time, you have a chance to look up and see Sky Lounge from below while other guests enjoy their meal. When it’s time to go up, Chef Stephen La Salle and his team from feast + revel, the restaurant at the Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market, take to the sky along with you to prepare and serve a three course meal.
The recipes are inspired by Canadian classics, and include Montreal bagel chips with arctic char, an original and delicious take on poutine, and butter tarts for dessert. Each dish uses the best ingredients from across Canada. The evening wraps up the way it began, back on the ground for a final drink. The experience lasts about 2 hours, with one hour in the sky. There is also a shorter option with cocktails and appetizers that takes you up in the sky for 20 minutes.
Heights not your thing? Chef Stephen La Salle and his team can normally be found back on earth, in feast + revel at the Andaz hotel. This boutique hotel is located in the ByWard Market, a bustling area of Ottawa known for its cafés, patios, and nightlife. The Andaz has a fantastic view of its own, with full-length windows allowing you to look out across Ottawa’s skyline.
After Dinner Shows
Whether you had dinner at Sky Lounge, at feast + revel, or in one of Ottawa’s other great restaurants, make your way to another temporary special event: Kontinuum. This underground multimedia experience, which runs between July 16 and September 14, 2017, will invoke your sense of wonder and ignite your mind. Tickets are free and can be booked online. Kontinuum is located a block from Parliament Hill, where you can also catch the annual Northern Lights Sound and Light Show and journey through Canadian history. The show takes place every night at 10 p.m. in July, at 9:30 p.m. in August and at 9:00 p.m. in September.
There’s still time to take in these unique summer experiences, so get out there and enjoy summer in Ottawa, especially during this special year!
