Family fun at Ottawa museums this summer

Ottawa is the perfect destination to spend quality family time together this summer. You can enjoy endless outdoor experiences and epic events, and then cool off in stellar national museums as you explore their special exhibits and interactive activities! Here are a few highlights you won’t want to miss this summer in Canada’s Capital:

Canadian War Museum

Tanks, jet fighters, artillery and art are just some of the impressive items that represent Canada’s war history at the Canadian War Museum. This summer, the special exhibit Armour explores the protective covering’s use on the battlefield, as sports equipment, as a status symbol and in pop-culture fantasy. Plus, try hands-on activities like creating your own family crest or coat of arms, go on a treasure hunt to match art with armour, and dress up as a history or pop culture hero.

Canadian Museum of History

Journey through 15,000 years of Canadian history by exploring the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles, the world’s largest exhibition about Canadian history, and the on-site Canadian Children’s Museum – all at the Canadian Museum of History! And this summer, you can step into the mystery of the Franklin Expedition, as well as the legendary world of medieval history. Go on an artifact hunt to reveal the final resting place of HMS Erebus, or dress up as a knight, queen or commoner and build castles, bridges and walls out of special foam blocks.

National Gallery of Canada

To truly appreciate Canadian, Indigenous and foreign art, the National Gallery of Canada is a must. You also won’t want to miss one of the world’s best collections of Impressionist art by masters like Manet, Monet, Degas, Pissarro and Renoir at this summer’s special Ordrupgaard exhibit. And the kids can play art games, make their own artworks and share it with people from around the world during the Artissimo activity. Creativity at its best!

It’s also easy and economical to explore Ottawa’s many national museums. With Canada’s National Museums Passport, you can visit three participating museums – including the three mentioned above – over three days for just $35 per person (each accompanying child age 17 and under receives a 30% discount on general admission). Get out there and take advantage of summer in Canada’s Capital!
